The National Academy of Sciences recently released its long-awaited report on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) Program. The study, which was required under the FAST Act, recognized several concerns with the program and offered many recommended improvements to address those concerns. FMCSA now has six months to develop a corrective action plan to implement the changes outlined in the report. The report can be found here: https://www.nap.edu/catalog/24818/improving-motor-carrier-safety-measurement.
In general, the CSA study confirmed NSTA’s concerns with respect to the quality of data and methodology of the CSA/SMS program. We will continue to analyze the report and work with our Coalition partners to determine our next steps.
