NSTA to Help Members Secure EPA DERA Grants for Retrofits, Replacements

NSTA will be applying for grants from the EPA's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program on behalf of our members. The DERA program provides funds for retrofits such as diesel particulate filters, idle reduction equipment such as direct-fuel heaters, or replacement buses. EPA will pay the total cost of retrofits and idle reduction, and 50% of the cost of a replacement bus that meets the 2010 emission standards.

Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Debate

Earlier this week, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood suggested that the federal gas tax be replaced with a vehicle miles-traveled levy as the main funding mechanism for road and bridge construction. However, President Barack Obama’s Press Secretary quickly dismissed the idea, saying the administration will not adopt a policy to tax motorists based on how many miles they drive instead of how much gasoline they buy.
