NSTA's Midwinter Meeting will be held January 15 - 19, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Curacao in Wimestad, Curacao.
About Curacao
Curacao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan Coast (see map at right.). Curacao is the largest and most populous of the three ABC islands (for Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) of the Lesser Antillies. Curacao was first discovered by Europeans in 1499 and since that time has changed hands between the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain and France. After the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, stable Dutch rule was solidified and the island has been associated with the Netherlands since that time. In addition to several European influences, the island has also been strongly influenced by African (due to its role in the slave trade in teh 17th century) and South America (due to proximity.) These many influences have forged a vibrant and rich culture. The primary languages spoken are Dutch, Spanish, English and the local language, Papiamentu, a colorful Creole dialect.
This small island has something to offer everyone from beautiful sand beaches to intimate coves surrounded by rocky cliffs. There are many diving opportunities, vibrant architecture, and a lively art scene. The local inhabitants are friendly and laidback.
