On Tuesday, April 13th, 2010, NSTA kicked off its annual Fly-In and spring board meeting in Washington, D.C. This year, NSTA joined with the United Motorcoach Association (UMA) for their day of meetings on Capitol Hill. Highlights of the week included a day on the Hill hearing from various members of Congress and the Administration and an appearance by Jennifer Duffy, Senior Editor of The Cook Political Report over dinner.
The group spent Tuesday, April 13th, in meetings with federal legislators and staff including Congressman Michael Arcuri (D-NY), Congressman Thomas Petri (R-WI), Congressman Howard Coble (R-NC), Congressman Jimmy Duncan (R-TN), Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL) and Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Congressman Jim Oberstar (D-MN). NSTA also heard from staff representing both the majority and minority on the House Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, House Appropriations Committee, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The group also heard from Ron Medford, Deputy Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); Linda Lasley Ford, Assistant Chief Counsel for Legislation and Regulations for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA); and Anne Ferro, Administrator for the Federal Motorcarrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Issues addressed in these meetings included transit encroachment, safety regulation, diesel fuel tax exemption, preservation of the charter bus rule, healthcare, climate change, DERA, and the school bus public education and awareness campaign.
On Wednesday, April 14th, NSTA members spent time meeting with their own Representatives and Senators in Washington to discuss priority issues and held Committee meetings in the afternoon.
On Thursday, April 15th, the Board held their spring meeting and finished business for the week.
